Be the change…
The Nursing Director’s example is important to building a culture of low carbon healthcare. Can you cycle or take public transport to work, cut meetings by 10% by switching to teleconferencing, or make your ward or department a plastic cup-free zone? If so, make sure you get into the hospital magazine!
6. Medics On Board
Pharmaceuticals and medical kit make up one-third of the NHS carbon footprint so clinical savings are big savings. Get departments looking for low value investigations and include carbon impacts in clinical audit. 10% of clinics done by telephone? We’re impressed.

A carbon footprint study of NHS England showed that procurement of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies causes more carbon emissions than either energy use or travel. By not opening unnecessary packets, ordering fewer tests and making sure that medication is only prescribed when needed, clinical staff can make big inroads to 10:10.
Ask clinical departments to improve the carbon efficiency of care: look out for activities which do not contribute to patient management or outcome, and think about including carbon impacts in clinical audit. Does the audit department know how to help with this? Perhaps you could arrange training.
Once low value activities are identified, can practice be changed through raising awareness or clinical guidelines?
Service planning offers an opportunity to completely redesign care around a low-carbon model. Make sure that carbon is considered from the outset in service development, and include indirect carbon – such as from patient and visitor travel. Which is better, hospital or community-based treatments? day case or inpatient? Can the Trust support a switch to telephone clinics?
