Green Commissioning Workshop

Wed, 04/11/2009 - 12:30 - 16:30
Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Portland Place, London

This event is fifth in the series of 'Focus on Commissioning Workshops' to discuss ways in which it is possible to commission healthcare services that take account of environmental impacts and greenhouse gas emissions. The workshop is being organised in conjunction with the Campaign for Greener Healthcare (CfGH) and the Map of Medicine team, and it is sponsored by the Informing Healthier Choices Project and World Class Commissioning.

Over the last two decades in the NHS, there has been a convergence of interest between the public health drive to reduce the potential for anthropogenic global climate change and the need to minimise economic waste in the system. In the current economic recession, and in the absence of global climate change, it would still be important to reduce the NHS carbon footprint. Similarly, in the absence of economic pressures, it would still be important to reduce environmental impacts in order to protect and improve people’s health and reduce sources of health inequality.

For these reasons, World Class Commissioning and the Informing Healthier Choices Project want to explore the possibilities of commissioning for high-value, low-carbon healthcare.
