In September 2009, we were delighted to appoint Andy Connor to a one-year SpR fellowship to improve the environmental sustainability of renal care, funded by NHS Kidney Care. Andrew was seconded from his post as a specialist trainee in Dorchester, and kept up a weekly clinical session there during the year.

During his secondment to The Campaign for Greener Healthcare, Andy received training in project management and clinical systems improvement, including a work placement with an industry partner.  Under supervision from The Campaign for Greener Healthcare and the University of Warwick, he undertook carbon modelling of clinical pathways and developing resources for sustainable models of kidney care.

The fellowship provides a unique opportunity to develop highly transferable skills in clinical leadership and systems improvement, while gaining a detailed understanding of environmental sustainability – an area central to the future of clinical care.

Outputs have included presentation at relevant national and international meetings, and publication of a paper in a peer-reviewed journal on the carbon footprint of kidney care in the UK, in addition to a Masters from the University of Warwick. Download a summary of the educational outputs of the fellowship here.
